homemade oat milk

oat milk

Oat milk is a great dairy alternative. It doesn’t have to be shop bought though and this quick, easy recipe can be easily introduced into your weekly routine.

Ingredients

1 cup organic rolled oats

3 cups filtered water

1 tsp vanilla essence

Method:
In a bowl, soak the oats in water (make sure they are covered) for no longer than 15 minutes. Drain them and rinse thoroughly under a running tap until the water that comes through the sieve is completely clear and no longer cloudy.

Add the drained and rinsed oats into a Vitamix or high-speed blender with 3 cups filtered water and vanilla essence if you choose. Pulse for a minute until completely blended.

Pour this liquid through a sieve. The first time you do it, there will be some residue that you should discard (keep the milk below it). Repeat the process a second time, and then a third time until there is no residue left in the sieve.

Transfer the milk into a sealed container and store in the fridge for up to 4 days. It will separate so stir before you drink it.

Sugar Safe Tips:
Unless you’re buying unsweetened nut milks, you may be unwittingly consuming more sugar than you realise. This recipe is flavoured with the vanilla essence to get the sweetness, but without any additives. It is also free from lactose – a naturally occurring sugar – providing a Sugar Safe alternative to dairy milk.
